A method of and apparatus for cooling and dispensing carbonated water wherein the method has the steps of providing a single supply 12 of condensed refrigerant, discretely routing a first portion of the refrigerant to a precooler 14 and precooling the water in a conduit 18 to about 40 DEG F (5 DEG C) with the first refrigerant portion, carbonating the precooled water in a carbonator 42, transferring the precooled water to a final cooler 16 of the ice bank tye and final cooling the water as close to 32 DEG F (0 DEG C) as is possible, and discretely routing a second portion of refrigerant to the ice bank. The flow of refrigerant to the precooler and the ice bank final cooler are discretely controlled by valves 54, 56; 76, 78 respectively which are controlled by transducers 60, 64; 80, 82 respectively. The carbonator may be upstream of the precooler and beverage concentrate cooled by the final cooler may be introduced into the carbonated water at valved dispensers (Fig. 2). <IMAGE>
