In order, in the case of a vacuum cleaner with a dirt-receiving container, a lid fitted onto the latter and having a suction unit, with a folded filter in a suction pipe emerging from the dirt-collecting container and with a cleaning-off device for the filter which can be operated from outside and is a wiper which is displaceable transversely to the edges of the folds of the folding filter and, during its displacement, comes to bear successively on the edges of the folds, to improve the action of the cleaning-off device, it is proposed that the wiper engages on the edges of the folded filter facing the dirt container, that the wiper penetrates between the folds, slightly beyond the area formed by the edges of the folds, and that the folds of the folded filter are flexible transversely to their edge direction.
