The invention relates to the automatic sawing of logs of small diameter in their first phase of conversion. The sawing machine is essentially made up of a drum 1 fitted with claws 2, of a loading station 3 whose rate is controlled by tilting stops 4 supplemented by a device 5 for offering up the logs 6 and flitches 7 and which is mounted on a sliding frame 8, of a bandsaw 9 supported by slides 10 mounted on slideways 11 connected by a chassis 12 equipped with wheels 13 rolling on rails 14, and of a conveyor 15 for removing the sawn products. The method consists in immobilising the log and moving the saw 9 with respect to the latter whilst during this time performing the operations of loading and measuring the diameter at the other stations made up of the other sides of the revolving drum 1.
