PURPOSE:To determine an unknown rotating speed according to the number of specific waveforms per unit time by recognizing the occasional feature waveform among the signal waveforms of a torque sensor. CONSTITUTION:The torque sensor 4 is constitute by sticking magnetostrictive thin belts 7a and 7b which vary in magnetic permeability with stress on the intermediate part of the power transmission shaft 2 at 180 deg. different positions. An alternating magnetic field is applied from exciting winding 8 to the magnetostrictive thin belts 7a and 7b and detection winding 9 provided on the outer periphery of the sticking part of the magnetostrictive thin belts 7a and 7b detects variation in magnetic permeability due to the rotational torque of the magnetostrictive thin belts 7a and 7b. Then the power transmission shaft 2 is rotate at a low speed to store information on the specific waveform of the torque sensor 4 in a feature waveform storage processing part 12; and a comparing and counting part 13 compares this stored information with the occasional signal waveform of the torque sensor 5 to count the wave number of waveforms similar to the specific waveform among the signal waveforms of the torque sensor 4, thereby determining the unknown rotating speed of the power transmission shaft 2 from the wave number per unit time.
