For the purpose of controlled resupply, based on the instantaneous requirement, of active materials (for example expanders for the negative electrode of a lead-acid accumulator), a supply container which is filled with the active material in the form of liquid or paste is connected, inside an accumulator housing, via a moving wall part (piston or porous membrane) to an electrochemical cell which develops gas when current is forced to pass through, for example connected in series with the accumulator cell, the volume of gas produced displacing an equal volume of active material from the supply container through an outlet opening into the electrolyte. In the case of a plurality of accumulator cells which form a battery assembly and are equipped with such active material supplies, the gas-developing cells are expediently brought into operation jointly and uniformly with the aid of a pilot cell.
