Electrochemical cells, in particular lithium thionyl chloride cells employing nonaqueous, inorganic solvents, have a high specific energy content. The object of the invention is to increase the speed and yield of the electrochemical reduction at the cathode with the aid of a catalyst. For this purpose, a solvent which acts as a depolariser in the form of a macrocyclic complex having a central ion selected from the transition-metal series is used in a proportion of between 0.01 and 5% by weight. Preferably, haemin, haem or haemin chloride, or a chemical derivative of haemin, such as aetioporphyrin, is used.
