The device of the invention comprises a base 1, a beam 8 with adjustable height, and, suspended in a cantilever fashion from the beam 8, above the base 1, a seat with removable bottom and removable backrest. The lower extremity of the beam 8 is fixed to the end of an arm 7 which is pivotally mounted at its other end to the centre of the base 1. The base 1 has the shape of an X, with a central zone 6 supported by four arms whose free ends are fitted with castors. The device of the invention makes it possible to pick up a patient from a bed or chair directly, or place him down thereon. <IMAGE>
