A plate evaporator for refrigerators and/or freezers has a collecting chamber for the liquid refrigerant, which is provided in its upper region with a connecting line leading to the suction side of the compressor; a meandering or coiled feed line for the refrigerant, with mainly horizontal sections, is located below the chamber and leads into it. So that no noise or only a greatly reduced amount of noise should be generated in a plate evaporator of this type, the feed line (3) ends in the lower region of the collecting chamber (1). To at least one of the successive horizontal sections of the feed line (3), there is connected a section of line (10) located below it, and running roughly parallel to it, which forms a roughly U-shaped collecting duct for the refrigerant (Fig. 5). <IMAGE>
