The novelty of this invention consists in the crank mechanism being divided and mounted in a u-shaped gearbox. The gearbox forms a compact unit with the frame structure. Coupling and power transmission from the pedal cranks is effected by way of a crank mechanism, by sprocket wheels, chain or toothed belt, or by a combination of the kinds of drive mentioned. The advantage of such a design is in its high torsional rigidity, its compactness, and the advantageous, ergonomic seat position. The passive safety is provided mainly by the relatively smooth side surfaces of the gearbox (no open-running chains and chain wheels), and by an ergonomically designed bicycle handlebar provided with an impact surface, and possibly including integrated displays such as a speedometer, cyclometer and chronometer.
