The invention relates to a device (1) for investigating chemical substances and their clouding by impurities, for example for investigating water quality. In order to facilitate a simple and also automatic investigation, the invention proposes providing the device (1) with a pulsed reflectometer (4) having a plurality of pulsed light sources (5, 6) and a broad-band receiver (7). The pulsed light sources each operate consecutively at different wavelengths. They preferably radiate the light onto a standard backscattering surface (13); the light backscattered from said backscattering surface and the light backscattered along the pulse path and, optionally, fluorescent light are received by means of the broad-band receiver and evaluated in an evaluation unit. <IMAGE>
