Pyrimidines (I)[R1, R2=H, halo, C1-4 alkyl, cyano, TFM, etc. respectively! are prepd. Thus, 3.06g 2-amino-thiazole is reacted with 6.4 g ethyl-2-methyl-acetoacetate in a mixt. contg. 8.2 g H3PO4 and 15.3 g:7.1 g P2O5 at 100↿C for 2 h. and crystallized to give 5.04 g 6,7-dimethyl-5H-thiazole [3,2-a! pyrimidin-5-one. This product is treated with 5.99 g 3-pyridine-carboxaldehyde in 130 ml methanol in the presence of 4.55 g sodium methoxide to give 3.2 g 6-methyl-7- trans-[2-(3-pyridyl)-ethenyl!-5H-thiazolo [3,2-a pyrimidin-5-one.
