1,6 alpha -Dimethyl-15 alpha -alkyl-1,4-androstadiene-3,17-diones of the general formula I <IMAGE> in which Ra is an alkyl group which has 1 to 10 carbon atoms and is optionally substituted in position 1 and/or 2 by one or two hydroxyl or alkanoyloxy groups with 1 to 7 carbon atoms or methylsulphonyloxy or methoxy groups or a 1,2-isopropylidenedioxy group, or is an alkenyl group with 2-10 carbon atoms. The compounds of the general formula I are suitable for controlling fertility and for treating diseases caused by oestrogens.
