In the version installed in a bed, a mat is placed on the under-blanket just below the pillow. Set into the mat is a flexible pipe in a maze pattern. One end of the pipe is sealed and the other end is connected to a pressure sensor unit. The pipe is filled with a liquid or gaseous fluid. When the patient lies on the mat, the fluid pressure increases and operates a switch in the sensor unit. If the patient gets out of bed or sits up, the pressure decreases and an alarm is sent via a cable, plug and socket to a central alarm system. The sensitivity of the system can be adjusted. A similar system can be incorporated in the arm chair.
