The pattern chain, which is arranged on a driven pattern drum, has chain links (K1, K2, K3, K4) which are held together by hinge bolts (32). The pattern region (M0, M2, M3) is in this case located in the region of the hinge bolts, adjacent chain links in each case having identical racking heights at the hinge bolts (32) and forming a common control cam (34). The switching region (S1, S2) is situated between the hinge bolts (32) and has a sine-like cam part (33) from one racking height to another. By these means, a gentle sliding of the feeler roller from one racking height over to another is guaranteed, as a result of which greater drive speeds are possible with lower wear and lower vibration. The individual chain links can also be re-used in the assembly of new pattern chains and put together in any sequence and direction. <IMAGE>
