In the configuration of the cutter head (4) as a longitudinal cutter head, a reaction moment torsionally stressing the cutter boom (7) is obtained in operational use in accordance with the installed power of the cutter-head drive. The reaction moment, apart from necessitating an appropriate design of the cutter boom (7), also necessitates special measures in the area of the machine frame (5) in order to be able to reliably dissipate this torsion moment. To avoid the heavy and expensive construction brought about by these construction measures, the cutter head according to the invention is subdivided into different head shells (13, 14) which, by means of a gear unit attached inside the cutter head (4), can be driven in opposite direction to the effect that the reaction moments originating from the individual head shells are at the very best completely compensated but are at least reduced in their sum, so that the design cost, directed towards transmitting and dissipating the torsion moment, in the area of the cutter boom (7) as well as the machine frame (5) can be kept low. Different peripheral velocities result here in the area of the picks of the individual head shells (13, 14) so that an optimum cutting speed can be set for the average pick diameter of a head shell. <IMAGE>
