A burner, in particular a gas burner, is equipped with a cooling system which is assigned at the side to the burner flames and which consists of water-bearing pipes (1 and 2) which are arranged above the fuel outlet openings (3) and which together form a grid, the meshes of which enclose the regions of the fuel outlet openings (3) all around. These pipes are preferably arranged in two mutually perpendicularly intersecting groups and interconnected at the intersection points. <IMAGE>
