PURPOSE: To eliminate the need for the accuracy of manufacture for obtaining superior separation in a polarizing direction by arranging a directional photoelectric coupler which separates and couples polarized light or has polarization independency. CONSTITUTION: This coupler has a two thin and long interactive area which is divided into two lateral parts on the top surface of a wafer 1, two optical waveguides 3 and 4 which extend in this interactive area longitudinally at a mutual interval, 3, 5-7, or 8-10 electrodes which are electrode means formed in the interactive area and extend along the optical waveguides to the overall lengths of corresponding parts, and a connection means for a power source. An optical wave P which is made incident on the input of the optical waveguides is coupled with one of the outputs of the optical waveguides, 3 and 4 through the operation of the electrodes. The light wave is optionally polarized and has orthogonal vibration modes TE and TM of light. Both the switches can be switched. Consequently, the electrodes and optical waveguides in simple structure are provided and the accuracy of the manufacture is not needed so much. |
