In a tractor (2) for agricultural or building use an axle beam (4) of a rigid axle (1), preferably designed as front axle, is suspended like a balance beam in a self-aligning bearing of a transverse link (7) located in front of the axle beam (4) by means of a spigot trunnion (6) running in the tractor's longitudinal direction. The said transverse link (7) is guided on the chassis (8) of the tractor at a distance from the self-aligning bearing (22) so that it can swivel in a support strut (9) and is spring-cushioned with respect to the chassis (8). In order to create a structurally favourable arrangement of the suspension of the rigid axle and for adequate support of the longitudinal force, a spring damper element (10) running vertically and acting directly on the transverse link (7) is provided, whilst a horizontally running radius arm, arranged centrally in relation to the transverse mid-plane of the axle beam and carried on the chassis (8) so that it is free to rotate by way of a ball joint (12), acts on the rear side of the axle beam (4). The transverse link (7) is guided by way of ball joints (20, 22, 24) on the support strut (9), on the spigot trunnion (6) and on the spring-damper element (10) (Fig. 3). <IMAGE>
