A carbothermic reduction process for Al prodn. is characterized by producing Al from the material mainly composed of Al oxide and carbon in reduction furnace by carbothermic process. The gas evolved during reduction is made to flow upward through the charged material in the furnace, and in postreaction region, chemical compounds producing or exothermic reaction occurs and the chemical compounds recirculate to the reduction region with the charged material. This process comprises (a) reduction of alumina and slag contg. carbonized Al with enough heat input in the hearth, (b) making of additive Al and gas without reactive C, (c) prodn. of preliminary reduced prodt. by transporting the gas from a and b, (d) Al gaining process.
