The apparatus has the read/write magnetic head comprising a magnetic core and two coils wound around the core. The magnetic circuit alternately excites the first and the second coils in response to the two level write data signals, thereby causing the coils to create mangetic fluxes in the opposite directions. The final excitation circuit is also connected to the write circuit to excite a preselected one of the coils of the head in the opposite directions.
