In a measuring method for surveying the ground in the zone in front of the face during underground driving (heading, developing) of tunnel cross-sections with the aid of a tunnelling machine and using a measuring device which measures the physical properties of the ground and whose measurement signals are evaluated by a computer in order to locate faults (dislocations), obstacles and changes in the ground, it is provided to scan the zone in front of the face in the direction of advance with the aid of the measuring device, which is mounted in the region of the heading face on machine elements of the tunnelling machine. In this case, the measuring device is preferably mounted on the cutter (cutting) head of the tunnelling machine, and the zone in front of the face is scanned in a circular fashion as the cutter head rotates. The measurement signals are transmitted to the computer together with an angle measurement system via rotary or radio transmitters.
