The elastic bandage knitted with a coarse mesh contains a group of composite parallel warp yarns (10) and a group of non-elastic filling yarns (12). Each warp yarn has a first and a second false-twist filament yarn. The first false-twist filament yarn is shaped to form fringes. The second false-twist filament yarn has the opposite direction of rotation and is inserted into the loops of the first false-twist filament yarn. The filling yarns are inserted into the warp yarns in a pattern recurring over the width of the bandage. They are arranged in pairs in each pattern. The filling yarns of the individual pairs run in a serpentine manner. The surface of the bandage is such that the various layers of the wound-up bandage adhere to one another.
