The holding-down device (27) can be raised from its active position, pressing onto a relevant sheet (35), into an inactive position, specifically by means of a lifting device which can be controlled by means of a sheet sensor (29) in such a way that the holding-down device (27) is raised into its inactive position in dependence on the arrival of each sheet (35) in a particular conveying position. <IMAGE>
