PURPOSE:To readily produce a composite material containing SiC as a matrix, having a high strength and also stable characteristics such as breakage toughness by sintering a raw material composition comprising the SiC, a IVa-VIa group element oxide, carbon (organic compound) and a sintering auxiliary. CONSTITUTION:A raw material composition comprising SiC, an oxide containing at least one of IVa group elements (Ti, Zr, Hr), Va group elements (V, Nb, Ta) and VIa group element (Cr, Mo, W) or a precursor thereof, carbon or an organic compound producing the carbon when pyrolyzed (e.g. carbon black, phenol resin or tar pitch) and a sintering auxiliary (e.g. Al, AlN or Al2O3) is sintered to provide a composite material wherein the IVa-VIa group element is dispersed in a matrix consisting of the SiC. |
