The invention relates to a method for the protection of electrical cables against excessive heating resulting from an overload current, the temperature of a cable (28) to be protected being detected locally as a measurement variable obtained in this case being converted into a tripping signal which is used, on reaching a defined threshold value, to act on an interruption point (10) arranged in the cable (28), as a result of which the current flow is interrupted. Furthermore, the invention relates to a device for carrying out the method, which device has an electrical switching apparatus (10) with an electromagnetic quick release (16), a switching mechanism (12) and a contact apparatus (18), a temperature sensor (20) being in contact with the cable (28) to be protected and being connected via a signal line (22, 23) to the electrical switching apparatus (10) so that the switching apparatus (10) is tripped on reaching a defined threshold value. <IMAGE>
