The invention relates to an air-compressing direct-injection diesel internal combustion engine with pilot and main injection in which an injection nozzle is arranged in the cylinder head at a distance from a combustion chamber, forming an ignition chamber which simultaneously acts as a calming chamber, and the ignition chamber is bounded by an ignition aid in the form of a sleeve-shaped continuously-acting glow element at which the pilot injection jet from the injection nozzle is directed.
