Process for obtaining oxynitride powders and more particularly gamma AlON or a mixture of alumina and AlON, starting with the nitriding of aluminium hydroxide or transition alumina powders at a temperature higher than approximately 900 DEG C. The invention also relates to the application of the oxynitride powders obtained to the preparation of ceramics.
