5-Chloro-2-methoxy-nicotinic acid (I) is prepd. by chlorinating 2- ,ethoxy-nicotinic acid (II) with an alkalimetal hypochlorite in a homogeneous aq. solvent at 10-30OC. (I) is an intermediate for hypoglycemic benzene sulfonylurea derivs.. In an example, a mixt. of (II) (306mg) and 5.25% aq. NaOCl(20ml) was stirred at 20OC for 18 hrs., acidified with 1N HCl and extracted with CHCl3. This extract was dried and evapd. to give (I) (195mg, m.pt. 139-141OC).
