When a new system module is installed, a configuration program is first loaded into the system memory. This program then performs the installation totally independently, i.e. it checks whether the system meets the installation requirements, loads the software of the new module to be installed into the system memory and modifies the system organisation accordingly. To do this, it is equipped with previously compiled installation data. In one embodiment, the configuration program and software to be installed are stored together on an information medium and the data processing system is equipped with a maintenance module, which is able to load the configuration program. Installation of a new system module is performed totally automatically once the maintenance module is started.
