The buffer for a railway vehicle has a housing (1) with a mounting flange (2) at its rear end. The buffer ram (4), which is fitted with a buffer palte (17) slides on the outside of the housing (2). The housing (1) has two or more radial projections (3) at its front end which engage axial grooves (6) in the ram (4) to prevent it rotating relative to the housing (1). A stack of disc springs is fitted inside the housing (1). The ram (4) has additional axial grooves (5) which extend over the whole length of the ram. These additional grooves enable the ram to be slid over the projections (3) and then rotated until the first set of projections (6) can engage the projections (3) and allow the ram (4) to be moved axially until the shoulder (8) at the end of each groove abuts against the rear face of a projection (3).
