摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain the objective substance in high yield by using a lower aliphatic alcohol, etc., having a high branching degree as a solvent in oxidizing 2,3,6-trimethylphenol with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a copper compound and various nitrogen compounds and providing the subject substance. CONSTITUTION:2,3,6-Trimethylphenol is oxidized with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst containing a copper compound and various nitrogen compounds (e.g. oximes, mixture of oximes-inorganic acid, salt of hydroxilamines with an inorganic acid or salt of amines with the inorganic acid) at ambient temperature to 80 deg.C to afford the subject substance. In the process, a 3-6C lower aliphatic alcohol (e.g. tert-butanol) having a high branching degree or a mixture solution of an aromatic hydrocarbon with a 1-6C aliphatic alcohol (e.g. benzene- methanol) is used as a solvent. The catalyst may be directly dissolved in the solvent or used as an aqueous solution. The above-mentioned method will not require recycling of the catalyst in a large amount as opposed to a conventional method.
