The invention relates to a device making it possible to vary the compression ratio of an internal combustion engine. It consists of the arms 6 which include the bearings 5 of the crankshaft 4. The arms 6 are articulated about a shaft 7 fixed to the crankcase 8 and supported at the other end by the cams 10. Rotation of the cams 10 causes the crankshaft 4 to move in a circular arc coinciding substantially with the axis of the cylinder 1. In this way the connecting rod assembly and piston 2 change position with respect to the cylinder-cylinder head assembly 1, 21 which consequently causes a variation in compression ratio as a function of instantaneous conditions of use of the engine. <IMAGE>
