A rolling mill stand has in each frame two housings for the roll bearings. The lower housings have on top two of recesses for hydraulic counterbalancing cylinders which have a larger total area of cross-section (by a factor of 1.05 - 3.00) than on the other side of the vertical centre line. The rolling mill stand (1) pref. has a housing (2) for an upper work roll (3) and a housing (4) for a lower work roll (5). Both lower housings have on both sides of the centre line (6) recesses for counterbalancing cylinders (7,8) with their piston rods (9,10) interacting with the upper housings. The piston rods (10) either a 1.05-3 times larger cross-section than the opposite rods (9) or if they have the same cross-section, there are four of them on the side (10) and three on the side (9).
