The method of image processing by analysis of scale contrast, comprises the steps consisting in: a) choosing a value a of scale parameter characterising the size of the particular structures 101 of the original image 1 to be taken into account; b) extracting at each elementary point, defined by a vector b, of the original image 1, through a wavelet transform Sg a, b the amplitude of the said chosen particular spatial structures 101 whose size is characterised by the value a of the scale parameter; c) choosing a weighting function h with unit norm in order to evaluate at each elementary point, defined by a vector b, of the original image 1 the average light level Lh, a, b which locally affects the perception of the variations in luminance, and; d) establishing at each elementary point, defined by a vector b, of the original image 1 the ratio of the wavelet transform Sg a, b and of the light level Lh, a, b in order to determine a scale contrast C a, b which depends on the location b within the image and on the scale a chosen for the analysis, so as to form a map representing the contrast making it possible in particular to obtain a final image of improved legibility in respect of the said chosen structures. <IMAGE>
