<p>A portable electronic device which has an on-line mode in which the device is connected to an external apparatus (16) in use, and an off-line mode in which the device is solely used, and incorporates a battery (25), comprises a data processing unit (28, 20, 26, 29, 30) having a basic processing function of the device, and a user application processing function, a memory unit (29 - 31) having a first memory area (31c), which is inhibited from writing, for storing a program for executing the basic processing function, and a rewritable second memory area (31a, 31b) for storing a user application program and data for it, and a memory controller (40X) for, when the user application program accesses the second memory area (31a, 31b) by a predetermined access command and when the access command includes a predetermined access approval code, approving read/write access to the second memory area (31a, 31b), and for, when the access command does not include the predetermined access approval code, disapproving read/write access to the second memory area (31a, 31b).</p> |
