The energy of flowing water is utilised by a generator driven by an impeller mounted on the sea or river bed. The impeller has radial blades on which the flowing water acts and causes the impeller to rotate. The impeller is mounted in a cylindrical housing and drives an electric generator. The housing can swivel about a vertical axis and stabilising fins align the housing so that the impeller axis is in line with the direction of flow of the water.
