Method for lifting or depositing loads by means of an appliance comprising a laterally movable counterweight (6) and a clamp (4) preferably movable at the end of an arm (3). The method essentially consists in raising or lowering the clamp (4) gently, in increments, whilst at each moment re-establishing equilibrium by means of a movement of the counterweight (6). The evaluation, by means of a detector (14), of the load lifted gives information, depending on the elasticity of the system, on the extent to which the method has been finished. The barrel (11) is suspended from a cable (12) or fastened to a rigid column. This method does not require any visual check and may be applied particularly to manipulations in a safety enclosure from outside. <IMAGE>
