PURPOSE:To selectively obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for a color-developing agent for a pressure-sensitive copying paper or as a color-developing agent for a heat-sensitive paper, from inexpensive raw materials, by reacting salicylic acid with a specific benzyl compound in the presence of aluminum chloride catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A 3,5-disubstituted salicylic acid is easily produced from a common raw material at a low cost by reacting (A) 1mol of salicylic acid with (B) 2-3mol of a compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are H, halogen, 1-12C alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl; R3 is or 1-4C alkyl) or 1-1.5mol of a compound of formula II in the presence of (C) 0.02-50mol%, preferably 0.1-10mol% (based on salicylic acid) of aluminum chloride catalyst at 50-180 deg.C (preferably 70-160 deg.C) for 1-20hr, thereby selectively introducing various benzyl groups to 3- and 5-sites of the salicylic acid. |
