The process for the manufacture of cylinders of solid CO2 essentially comprises the following stages: production of a solid CO2 snow by decompression of a liquid CO2 flow under pressure; introduction of the solid CO2 snow into means (2) for compacting and extrusion in a waiting position (15); compacting of the solid CO2 snow to a predetermined density; extrusion of compacted solid CO2 through an exit orifice (19) so as to obtain a cylinder of extruded solid CO2 (24); cutting off the extruded cylinder when the latter reaches a predetermined length; and return of the compacting means to their waiting position to receive the solid CO2 snow again. The device for making use of this process makes it possible to obtain cylinders of solid CO2 of accurate weight in particular for an accurate metering of CO2. <IMAGE>
