PURPOSE:To advantageously obtain the title compound as a raw material for the production of polymethyl methacrylate good in weatherability and transpar ency by vapor phase catalytic reaction in the presence of a specific catalyst using raw material(s) such as alpha-hydroxycarboxylic ester and/or alpha- alkoxycarboxylic ester, etc. CONSTITUTION:In the presence of a catalyst prepared by modifying a crystalline aluminosilicate with an alkali metal, a raw material, at least one ester selected from alpha-hydroxycarboxylic esters, alpha-alkoxycarboxylic esters and beta- alkoxycarboxylic esters (e.g. methyl alpha-hydroxyisobutyrate) is put to vapor phase catalytic reaction pref. either in a soventless state or in a diluent, an alcohol corresponding to the alkoxy segment of the ester (e.g. methanol), thus obtaining the objective compound. It is preferable that said crystalline aluminosilicate be X- or Y-type zeolite and the amount of the alkali metal to be used for the modification be such as to be 1-15wt.%. |
