PURPOSE:To efficiently produce the subject compound under an extremely modest condition by bringing a silyl peroxide into contact with water and/or a specific alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst to obtain a hydroperoxide and reducing. CONSTITUTION:A silyl peroxide (e.g. 1-triethylsilyl peroxy-1-phenyl ethane) expressed by formula I (R<1> to R<3> are H, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, etc.; R<4> to R<6> are H, alkyl or alkoxy, etc., and R<4>, R<5> and R<6> are not simultaneously H) is brought into contact with water and/or an alcohol expressed by formula II (R<7> is alkyl, arylalkyl or aryl) in the presence of an acid catalyst to obtain hydroperoxide expressed by formula III. Next, said hydroperoxide is reduced to afford the aimed hydroxyl group containing compound (e.g. phenethyl alcohol). By said producing method, the aimed compound is able to be safely and efficiently produced in a modest condition by using silyl peroxide as a raw material. The resultant compound is useful as various solvents or raw materials of organic compounds, etc. |
