The machine for breaking up the soil has a frame which carries a row of rotors which are mounted with their axes vertical. Each rotor has a number of tines attached to its periphery and projecting vertically downwards. Each tine (3) has a horizontal flange (8) at its upper end by which it is bolted to the rotor. The lower end of the tine, which penetrates the soil, has a trapezoidal cross-section. The tine is so mounted that the thicker edge (B) is the leading edge in the direction of rotation of the tine.
