In order to create a registered pattern on a coil of metal strip (60), a pattern applicator roll (88) driven by a drive motor (102) contacts the metal strip (60) as the strip is fed past the applicator roll (88), permitting the roll to create a pattern on the moving strip. The pattern length is measured using a photo cell (114) with the desired pattern length by a comparator (126). The speed of rotation of the pattern applicator roll (88) is adjusted if the measured pattern length departs from the desired pattern length by a predetermined amount and either speeds up the applicator roll (88) where the pattern length is longer than the desired pattern length, or reduces the applicator roll speed, if the pattern length is less than the desired pattern length. Preferably coil line speed is also monitored. A microprocessor may be used to effect the comparison between the desired pattern length and the actual pattern length. <IMAGE>
