A method of determining the optimal positions of a plurality of detection energy beams (28) within a volume (26) of space under surveillance and used to detect the presence of an object (38) within such space comprises generating a set or map of reflection data corresponding to the points in said space where there is a high probability of detection. Each of a plurality of objects, such as vehicles (38), are successively displaced through the area under surveillance, and a set of sampling beams are trained on the object at each of a plurality of incremental positions to determine the distances, equatorial angle and azimuthal angle at which reflections from the object can be obtained. The recorded data provides a reflective feature map which can be used to determine the optimal number, placement and range of beams needed to reliably detect any of a plurality of objects, as in a collision avoidance system for vehicles.
|
