The multi-staged switch gear consists of a gear rim (4) consisting of a drive chain (2) with many links, or a flexible drive belt. The gear rim (4) can be altered by at least one auxiliary gear rim (8) by altering the length of the drive chain (2) in its part cirlce-diameter (5) by means of adding or subtracting links (1). At least one preferably free end (9) of the drive chain (2) is held in a store (7) by the auxiliary gear rim (8). The auxiliary gear rim (8) is pushed synchronously with the radial alteration in the distance between the side guide of the drive chain (2). USE/ADVANTAGE - The auxiliary gear rim is positioned so that the drive chain link is supported by the auxiliary gear rim, before being guided into the store.
