Method for self-exciting an alternator (1), without energy transmission by sliding contact, especially an alternator for supplying power to a rotating inductor of a synchronous machine, comprising, on its rotor (4), an armature coil (40) carrying induced currents and an inductor coil (23) on its stator (3), separated from the rotor by a gap (e) traversed by a common magnetic flux (PHIc). A modulation of the common magnetic flux (PHIc) is created at a frequency equal to a predetermined multiple of the rotational frequency of the alternator, an electromotive force induced in the receiver coils (21) at the stator (3) of the alternator by the said modulation of the common magnetic flux (PHIc) is picked up at the terminals of the said receiver coils (21), and the inductor coil (23) is supplied with power by a substantially constant current resulting from the rectification of the electromotive force induced in the receiver coils (23). Use especially for supplying power to rotating inductors of synchronous machines. <IMAGE>
