<p>An electrode element (14) for an electrolytic capacitor (10) comprises an electrode body (20) having a plurality of ultra-fine, ribbon-shaped filaments (22, 24) of Al and X (where X is selected from Nb and Ta) interspersed and aligned along an axis of the body (20). The Al filaments (22) are preferentially removed from a portion of the electrode body (20) to provide a large surface area electrode surface comprising exposed end surfaces (26) of the Al filaments (22) and exposed lengths (28) of the X filaments (24) protruding beyond the exposed end surfaces (26) of the Al filaments (22). Dielectric oxyde films (27, 29) are formed on the exposed surfaces (26) of the Al filaments (22) and on the exposed lengths (28) of the X filaments (24) by an anodizing operation. A solid or liquid electrolyte (15) is infiltrated into interfilament interstices between the exposed lengths (28) of the X filaments (24) and cathode electrode (12) is placed in electrically conductive relation to the electrolyte to form an electrolytic capacitor (10).</p> |
