The process permits programmable printing of variable information in rotogravure quality on a print material (34). The printing ink carrier (2) is a step matrix. The quantity of ink supplied by each grid point of the step matrix can be controlled by means of an electric current. The programme-controlled activation with electric current changes, directly or indirectly, the quantity of ink supplied from the printing ink carrier (2).
