The gluing unit positions and applies fly-leaves to book blocks in a binding machine. There is a transfer channel for the blocks onto a machine conveyor with clamping jaws, with separate fly-leaf channels along the transfer channel. Transport members feed the block and fly-leaves together in the conveyor, and gluing discs secure the fly-leaves to the block. The fly-leaf channels (8) are initially parallel to the transfer one (2), but are inclined to it at the end, where the discs (10) protrude into them. The discs are chamfered to correspond to the angle of the channels and form strips of glue along the fly-leaves (1a,1b) near the spine of the block. Compression members (30) press the fly-leaves against the block.
