Assembly, to stitch shoulder pads etc., has a workpiece carrier (12) with a reciprocating movement about at right angles to the sewing direction of the sewing machines. Sewing machines for their part, have a movement at right angles to the stitching direction and to the workpiece movement. Both movements are co-ordinated by a program control. Workpiece carrier has a swing movement, and the sewing machines have a straight line sliding action. Workpiece carrier holds the workpiece in the form of a cylindrical mantle section, with its axis closely matching the swing axis of the workpiece carrier, or the workpiece is carried on a curved frame at one side and a frame section fixed to it at the other side, with the workpiece clamped between them. Workpiece carrier has two workpieces, in a mirror image, and two sewing machines switched in parallel, simultaneously stitch both workpieces. Both sewing machines are on a common frame, with sliding movements against each other. Two sewing machines (4,5) are in a mirror image assembly, powdered in opposite rotary directions. ADVANTAGE - Stitching operation is fully automated, without requiring manual guide actions on the workpiece.
